A message from the Six to Six Principal Emma Balter

Our goal for us at Six to Six is to make all members   of our community feel a sense of belonging.  We   are all critical to the success of our program, from  staff to students, and custodians to nurses, and   parents to community members. The goal of our   school is three fold: to continue to build climate, to foster healthy and transparent communication, and   to support engaging and challenging curriculum for our students.  Working together as a team, we can support our students on their educational journey to becoming lifelong learners who make positive contributions to our world.

Of course, our kids are at the center of it all - they are why we are here.  I am truly lucky to be working in this magical place as principal and I cannot wait to see all the places we will go working together as the family that is Six to Six.

"Oh the places you'll go! There is fun to be done! There are points to be scored. There are games to be won. And the magical things you can do ...will make you the winning-est winner of all." ― Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You’ll Go

As one of the administrators at Six to Six, my goal is to ignite a love of learning in every student.   As a community we strive to foster meaningful relationships and build a safe, supportive environment that develops life-long learners who care and think deeply about their world.

In our school, students have access to an engaging and differentiated instructional program.  Our staff collaborates to ensure all children can successfully meet the expectations of the curriculum and can achieve to their fullest potential.  We must prepare each student not simply with the basic skills they need to be successful, productive citizens, but we must also spark a true thirst for knowledge in their minds.  With a solid foundation built during students’ years at Six to Six, it is our greatest hope that this spark will burn throughout their lifetime.

We also strive to foster deep and caring relationships with our students, their families and our greater community.  I make it a point to visit all classrooms every week, am a consistent part of greeting families during arrival and dismissal, and enjoy truly getting to know each student. With a focus on social emotional learning, we are able to cultivate the positive school climate we all have the fortunate opportunity to share.

Please contact me anytime to chat about school, your student(s) or just to say hello.  My door is always open.

Our magnet school is committed to providing your children an educational experience that fosters academic excellence,  lifelong learning, and a sense of social conscience. As parents and guardians, we value the important role you play in the growth and achievements your children will make under the skilled teaching and care of our staff.

In the words of Dr. Maria Montessori, renowned physician and educator,   "The greatest gifts we can give our children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence”. I look forward to the promise every day brings, at Six to Six Magnet School, to collaborate with families in support of all of our children. You can find my office in the Thurgood Marshall Middle School building.

About our school -

Six to Six Interdistrict Magnet School in Bridgeport, Conn., is a unique preschool-through-grade eight educational setting where high academic standards facilitate the development of lifelong learners, problem-solvers and independent thinkers. Our philosophy centers on the belief that all children can learn at higher levels when schools utilize effective communication, parental and community involvement, high expectations, ongoing assessment, intentional teaching and collaboration.

Our mission is to foster educational excellence and lifelong learning in an atmosphere that honors each child's physical, intellectual, social and emotional needs within a diverse school community based on mutual respect and sense of social conscience.

Six to Six has evolved into a science, math and technology magnet school through the 2007 U.S. Department of Education Magnet School Assistance Project grant. All students in kindergarten through eighth grade participate in inquiry-based science activities through partnerships with the
Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, the Eli Whitney Museum, NASA, and The Jason Project.

Modeled after
Yale University's CoZi Model for School Reform, Six to Six was designed to meet the needs of the whole child and the needs of today's families. Our curriculum includes instruction in Art, Music, Physical Education, Library Media, and Spanish. We also value the importance of social emotional learning through our Responsive Classroom approach. To meet the needs of today's families, our school includes before- and after-school programs, a full-time NAEYC accredited preschool and kindergarten program.

Teachers at Six to Six strive to know each child as an individual and to work in partnership with the family to understand the child’s social and academic growth in order to meet the child’s needs with appropriate learning experiences. The relationship between teachers and children is the foundation for creating a nurturing classroom community where children respect, care for, and learn from one another. Student learning and assessment are the focus of our teachers’ professional growth and school improvement plans.
